One of the most exciting emerging technologies in CCTV is being able to track movement. The PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera in the video is capable of this.

This is a good example of how well this technology can work, however, it is not without its flaws.

For example, if somebody is walking from left to right in the picture, and somebody else is walking the opposite way – how can the camera track them both? How does the camera decide? Will the decision be the most logical one? Likewise – if a car is coming down the road from the opposite direction, the tracking will focus on the vehicle as it is the bigger object. A moving car is not likely to be as dangerous as a potential criminal roaming your property at night.

At the moment the technology may be best suited to industrial car-parks rather than a busy road. The logic for this being – the camera will usually only have one object to track. It is, however, only a matter of time before the technology becomes more mainstream and reliable.
